Tractors, Seeders and Harvesters

Once you've gotten past a few levels and accumulated some coins, you will get the option to purchase Tractors for Plowing, Harvesters for harvesting (duh, redundant) and Seeders for Planting.  This is faster than using the Avatar because the initial machine that you buy for 30000 coins affects 4 plots at a time (2x2 square).  Once you get to Co-Oping, one of the prizes is the School Bus Plow.  This plow does 9 plots at a time (3x3) square.  If you are really a Zynga Nut,  Farmers who are also Level 10+ Mafia Wars players can buy a Hot Rod Plow that does the same 3x3 plowing that the School Bus does.

Running these Machines takes Fuel (lots of it!) and you know how much fuel you have by looking at the fuel guage on the lower left corner of your screen.  A "Full" tank is 150 units of fuel and you can have 6 full tanks at once for 900 units.  That will plow, seed and harvest 300 plots.  A Large Can of Fuel or Refill is 150 units (3 Farmville bucks) and a small Can of fuel is 60 units.

The game trickles fuel into your tank at about a unit every 15 minutes.  The best way to get more fuel is to fertilize your neighbors crops.
